No Way Am I Taking Statins Again

I experienced painful “rare” side effects.

My doctor was reassuring. “Very few people have side effects,” she said. But it turned out that I was one of them.

My cholesterol levels had always been normal until a couple of months before. With the “bad” results in front of us, my doctor and I discussed the benefits of medication, but nothing was said about diet or the possible side effects associated with statins.

I took the medication as prescribed for just over three weeks.

For the last week of that period, my knee joints were stiff and tender.

The following day, both knees became swollen and puffy, and it was excruciating to walk.

There’s nothing wrong with my knees, so I reasoned that the most likely cause was the statins. I immediately stopped taking them. I could have waited to see a doctor first, but the pain and discomfort were too great.

Just 24 hours later, my knees had lost much of their puffiness. And the improvement continued. As each day passed, the pain reduced and my mobility slowly returned.

Just before the “bad” blood results, I had been overindulging for days in one of my favorite foods, cheese. I had been given a hamper of specialist small farm cheeses. The selection…
